In the recent past, CQD has been invited to report on numerous symposiums and events.  Below is a listing and brief description of some of the events we have covered.  Please click on the highlighted text for more information.

2002 Events:
11th International Congress on Marine Corrosion and Biofouling, San Diego, California 22 July to 26 July 2002:  Specialists from the fields of marine antifouling, biocides, ship coatings, and more, met at the University of San Diego, CA for Biofouling 2002.  Topics include: Antifouling & the Environment, Copper and the Environment, San Diego Bay - A Case Study.

11th International Conference on Aquatic Invasive Species - February 25 to March 1, 2002:  The U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center is the host sponsor of the 11th International Conference on Aquatic Invasive Species. This annual four-day conference is widely considered the most comprehensive forum for the review of accumulated scientific knowledge, presentation of the latest field research, introduction of new technological developments for prevention, monitoring, control and mitigation, and discussion of policy, legislation, public education and outreach initiatives related to aquatic invasive species.

Engineering for a Sustainable Marine Environment
presented by The
American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE) and The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME).  Marine Environmental Engineering Technology Symposium (MEETS 2001) - May 31 – June 1, 2001  Doubletree Hotel, Crystal City, Arlington, VA.

 

 

Dredging Remediation & Environmentally Sustainable Harbors Conference - April 3-4, 2001
Sponsored by the Maritime Association Port of New York & New Jersey in cooperation with the Dredging Contractors of America. The gathering is focused on high speed ferry transportation of the 21st century, environmentally sustainable harbors and beneficial reuse of dredge materials.

International Ballast Water Treatment R&D Symposium - IMO London 26-27 March 2001
The introduction of harmful aquatic organisms and pathogens to new environments, including via ships' ballast water, has been identified as one of the four greatest threats to the world's oceans.  It is estimated that a foreign marine species is introduced to a new environment somewhere in the world every nine weeks.  Human health, ecological and economic impacts can be severe, with the latter estimated at US$123 billion per year.

 

2000 Events:
Ensus 2000 - Marine Science and Technology for Sustainability
September 4th to September 6th, 2000 - University of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK
Maritime Authorities all over the world are introducing new regulations to reduce the environmental impact from marine industry.  Ensus 200 gathers together experts in the maritime field to outline and discuss technological advances to realise environmental impact reduction from marine design and operations.

The IMO antifoulings debate - Status of deliberations at MEPC 45, by Richard Halluska, President ISM Solutions Inc. and technical advisor to BIMCO at MEPC 45.

May 17, 2000 - Maritime Safety Committee, 72nd Session -  "Governments and Maritime Leaders Reaffirm Relationship – IMO is The Place for Shipping Regulations"

CMA Shipping 2000:  March 21 - 22, 2000 - "Shipping Industry Leaders Discuss Environmental Regulations"

Diplomatic Conference & MEPC 44 Coverage (London, March 6 - 15, 2000)
March 6th to 15th, the
Marine Environment Protection Committee  debated marine pollution policy on topics such as antifoulants and ballast water.
March 9th to 15th, IMO requested their members to decide whether or not to approve protocol measures for
Preparedness, Response and Co-operation to Pollution Incidents by Hazardous and Noxious Substances, 2000 (HNS Protocol).  The HNS Protocol desires to protect the marine environment from hazardous cargo incidents in a similar manner that other measures help protect the oceans from oil spills.

 

1999 Events:
CQD Special Sessions coverage of IMO's General Assembly (London, November 1999) The International Maritime Organization's General Assembly meets once every two years.  CQD was there in November of 1999 to report on issues including a decision on Tributyltin antifouling paint.

CQD Coverage of Oceans '99 Special Sessions (Seattle, Washington, September 1999) Issues including vessel antifouling paint, treatment of regulated discharges from shipyards and drydocks, national perspectives on discharges from shipyards and drydocks and advances in oil spill response are some of the issues CQD reported on.

 

1998 Events:
The International Symposium on Marine Pollution   (Monaco, October 1998)
CQD was one of the few journalist organizations invited to attend the first international symposium on pollution in 25 years held in Monaco October 5 - 9, 19Port of Monaco98.  Leading scientists from over 70 nations of the world presented in excess of 300 papers.  Topics included pollution from ships, biological effects of pollutants, sources of contaminants in the marine environment, monitoring, transport and distribution of radionuclides, global and regional marine pollution studies of special interest, risk assessment and management of marine pollution.
