HNS Protocol Summary

March 9th to March 15th – CQD is in attendance at the London headquarters of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the branch of the United Nations in charge of prevention of marine pollution by ships.

IMO's delegates and scientific experts are debating in two environmental meetings important to shippers.  From March 6th to 15th, the Marine Environment Protection Committee will be debating marine pollution policy on topics such as antifoulants and ballast water.

From March 9th to 15th, IMO will also request their members to decide whether or not to approve protocol measures for Preparedness, Response and Co-operation to Pollution Incidents by Hazardous and Noxious Substances, 2000 (HNS Protocol).  The HNS Protocol desires to protect the marine environment from hazardous cargo incidents in a similar manner that other measures help protect the oceans from oil spills.

CQD starts our coverage at the opening of the HNS Protocol session on Thursday March 8th and continuing reporting on the events in London until Tuesday March 15th.
